Master's programmes at the Faculty of Social Sciences

General Information

(c) University of Vienna

Students can enrol in a master’s programme after completing a bachelor’s or diploma programme in the same discipline. The academically oriented master’s programmes last four semesters. Graduates are awarded the degree “Master of …” (M plus additive according to the curriculum, e.g. MA or MSc). The master’s programmes comprise 120 ECTS credits and are structured according to the Bologna framework.

Where equivalence exists in principle, additional courses and examinations to the extent of no more than 30 ECTS credits may be prescribed for full equivalence. These examinations are determined during the admission procedure and must be completed in the course of the master’s programme. Contact your StudiesServiceUnit/Department for information about any additional courses and examinations to be completed.

Your responsible StudiesServiceUnit is your first point of contact for general information and questions relating to administrative matters concerning your course of study.

For information on the content of the individual Master's programmes, please refer to our overview of the social science master's programmes and the programme profiles linked there.

Information Events

Are you interested in studying at the Faculty of Social Sciences? At the following events you can find out more about the different fields of study and talk to students of the Faculty:

 Admission

The decisive factor for admission to a master's programme is whether your previous studies are suitable in terms of subject matter. You can find detailed information on eligible previous studies for your desired master's programme in the Master Access Guide. Information on the application and admission procedure for the respective master's programmes can also be found in our overview of social science master's programmes.

Please enquire in advance about the current application and admission deadlines.
Please note that different application deadlines may apply depending on the master's programme you are considering, as some English-language master's programmes include a selection procedure.
You must report the continuation of your studies (= re-enrolment) in a timely manner each semester.

A special case is the same day admission to consecutive master's programmes in the same discipline (german). This rule may be relevant if you complete a bachelor's programme at the University of Vienna during the current semester and already wish to complete examinations for the corresponding master's programme within the same semester. Please enquire in advance about the advantages and disadvantages of same day admission to consecutive master's programmes in the same discipline (german).
